Roses & Poppies
Roses & Poppies is Cornelis Maes at his most opulent. Crimson roses, blousy poppies and ranunculus overflow an ornate cast urn in a great cascading arc, fallen petals and a dragonfly on the ledge below, the blooms blazing against a deep shadowed ground. Maes works in the lavish van Huysum manner, the flowers tumbling in studied profusion, each petal modelled with translucent glaze and crisp highlight. The single raking light gives the arrangement a sculptural depth, the warm reds glowing out of the dark. Sumptuous, romantic and masterfully composed, it is the most exuberant bouquet in the collection — abundance rendered as high art.
An original oil painting on canvas by Cornelis Maes, painted to order — never a reproduction. Sumptuous old-master still lifes — lavish flowers, fruit and banquet pieces in dramatic chiaroscuro, hyper-detailed and richly glazed in the manner of the Dutch masters.
