Fjord Village

Fjord Village is Lucien Aubry at his most dramatic. Towering green cliffs, threaded with thin silver waterfalls, plunge to a deep-blue fjord where a cluster of red and ochre wooden houses huddles on the shore and small fishing boats ride the still water. Aubry builds the whole scene from flat, outline-free planes of colour, the pines stacked in geometric layers and a soft pale sun hanging in the cool sky. A fine paper grain lies over everything, lending the warmth of a vintage railway poster. The contrast of monumental landscape and tiny human settlement gives the image real grandeur and calm. It is Voyage Modernism turned northern — majestic, hushed and beautifully spare.
