Bouquet and Moon

Bouquet and Moon

Bouquet and Moon turns a simple still-life into a vision. An enormous, exuberant bouquet of flowers fills the canvas, and nestled within or floating beside it are a tiny pair of lovers and a slender crescent moon, the scales of the everyday and the cosmic joyfully confused. Mira Aronson works in Chagall's most generous register, where a vase of flowers can contain an entire love story and the moon can hang at arm's reach. The colour is jewel-rich — deep reds and blues, white blooms glowing against the night — and the composition overflows with abundance and tenderness. The bouquet, in Chagall's world, was always a token of love and celebration, and here it becomes a whole universe in miniature, the lovers cradled among the petals. Aronson paints with a lyrical, dreamlike freedom, scale and gravity bowing to emotion. Joyful, romantic and quietly magical, it offers the viewer a bouquet that is also a cosmos, a gift of flowers that holds the moon and two hearts within it. It is abundance, love and wonder gathered into a single radiant armful.

An original oil painting on canvas by Mira Aronson, painted to order — never a reproduction. Dreamlike folk fantasy — floating lovers, fiddlers and flying figures over moonlit villages in deep blues and reds, in the poetic spirit of Chagall.
